BLENHEIM GARDEN

BRIEF HISTORY

Blenheim was named after the famous Blenheim palace in Oxfordshire, UK, home to the Dukes of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. In memory of this palace, John Ward, a farmer from Somerset, built in the 1860s his own Blenheim in the Clare Valley, South Australia.

Surrounding Blenheim are a number of fascinating relics from the past. To the rear of the house is the old winery where John Ward made wine and brandy. Located in the garden is the cellar with the distinctive curved roof and chimney, and in front of this the original orchard.  There are many beautiful, secluded walking trails in the hills surrounding the home.

Blenheim has had a number of different roles in its life time, notably as a school in the 1940s, and home to three farming families.
